L’industria culturale e il design
L’accostamento ai Beni Culturali del termine e delle pratiche legate al design è un fatto di recentissima conquista . Esso deve la sua altrettanto giovane fortuna alla diffusa consapevolezza che il nostro Paese, oltre ad essere un territorio indiscutibilmente denso di “risorse” di questa natura, è anche un luogo fortemente bisognoso di attivare una, perlomeno rinnovata, sensibilità fruitiva delle medesime.
L’interesse del design nella direzione dei beni culturali è legato alla necessità di considerare i beni culturali come capitale da immettere all’interno di un processo di produzione del valore secondo logiche non completamente dissimili da altri settori produttivi (risorse minerarie attraverso la coltivazione delle cave, risorse intellettuali attraverso la pratica del diritto d’autore e del brevetto, risorse ambientali attraverso procedimenti di bonifica e salvaguardia, ecc.).
Il bene culturale e paesaggistico è oggi indubbiamente globalmente considerato una risorsa. Ma non lo era in modo altrettanto accettato meno di mezzo secolo fa. Nel nostro paese questa consapevolezza all’interno della coscienza comune corre di pari passo con la pratica normativa che ha oramai accettato l’idea che oltre alla conservazione ed alla tutela esistono campi del sapere e pratiche altrettanto importanti per il futuro dei beni culturali quali appunto i processi di valorizzazione.
Esiste il marketing dei B.C., esiste il project financing dei B.C., esiste il management dei B.C., perché mai non dovrebbe esistere il design dei B.C.?
Facciamo quindi riferimento ormai da qualche tempo ad un giovane settore produttivo organizzato che si chiama “industria culturale” (Abruzzese, Borrelli, 2000), “ una complessa vicenda di continue sintesi e fratture tra lavoro e intrattenimento, tra produzione e consumo …… una straordinaria macchina …….. di quello straordinario intreccio di linguaggi che l’Occidente ha realizzato nelle forme della cultura di massa”.
La cultura della produzione va in aiuto alla produzione della cultura, o per meglio dire, alla produzione di valore attraverso la cultura.
Come la cultura della produzione ad un certo punto della sua evoluzione industriale intreccia la cultura umanistica e l’arte generando il disegno artistico per l’industria (poi il disegno industriale più tardi il design), nel tentativo di perfezionare e diversificare la sua offerta, così l’industria culturale, nata già matura, richiede nel suo evolversi e migliorarsi una sempre maggior cura per la forma dello scambio attraverso il quale si trasforma da risorsa in valore.
Ciò che si consuma non è tanto il bene culturale quanto il piacere di partecipare alla vicinanza ad esso (Purini, 2003).
Pertanto sosteniamo che il design interagisce con il bene culturale nel momento che questi, riconosciuto come risorsa (potremmo dire riconosciuto come valore d’uso), deve essere immesso in un sistema di scambio per produrre, direttamente o indirettamente, valore di scambio.
Ma non tutto quello che della cultura del design è applicabile ad un processo produttivo è parimenti trasferibile al cultural system; ogni ingenuo e diretto parallelismo tra il sistema industriale classico di produzione (terreno da cui nascono le competenze fondative del design) e il mondo dei beni culturali va osservato con timore.
E’ indubbio che sul terreno della produzione di massa degli oggetti fabbricati industrialmente si sia forgiata la strumentazione e buona parte delle pratiche del design. E’ altrettanto indubbio che i due sistemi (quello industriale e quello culturale) se confrontati presentano strutturali diversità.
La diversità che riteniamo fondamentale notare è che la tripartizione esistente nel sistema di produzione delle merci: produttore-mediatore/distributore-consumatore, nel sistema culturale non esiste più.

O meglio non esiste più la figura isolabile del produttore del bene. Il bene c’è. E’ il mediatore che ne valuta o scopre la possibilità di produrre valore. E il sistema si semplifica numericamente ma si complica in termini di ruolo. E’ infatti colui che progetta e gestisce la valorizzazione l’unico attore regista dell’operazione (quindi produttore), e il prodotto è un processo, poiché ciò di cui il destinatario si appropria non è mai il bene medesimo, ma una aspirazione alla sua comprensione, un esperienza di avvicinamento.
“Il mercato e i processi di consumo desacralizzano il bene culturale ma tale laicizzazione non ne compromette la sostanza conoscitiva, poiché il consumo non consuma in alcun modo l’opera d’arte: il ciclo del consumo nel quale è immerso il bene culturale si rivela intrinsecamente democratico e consente un numero considerevole di avvicinamenti differenziati, non necessariamente semplificati “(Purini, 2003).
Nel processo di valorizzazione che osserviamo sono pertanto tre i termini su cui riteniamo fondamentale concentrare l’attenzione:
il bene culturale:
- che ha confini sempre più labili, non appena codificati in Italia dal Testo Unico, e già messi in discussione. B.C. è ogni frammento o insieme di fatti e di segni che testimonia civiltà. Un insieme dinamico difficilmente utilmente tassonomizzabile;
- che si è sviluppato finora, soprattutto in Italia, all’interno di un quadro di saperi e pratiche integralmente caratterizzato dai pregiudizi della conservazione e della tutela;
- un oggetto di attenzione intorno al quale pullulano i soggetti formati su basi teorico-conoscitive (teoria e critica) in quasi assoluta assenza di soggetti e profili professionali abilitati ad intervenire progettualmente sul B.C. e sui processi di valorizzazione e comunicazione del medesimo;
il design:
- che si è espresso finora intorno al B.C. soprattutto in funzione di tre insiemi di competenze isolabili: gli specialisti (per esempio gli illuminotecnica delle opere d’arte); i comunicatori (tradizionali e multimediali); e i registi, ovvero coloro che assumono una funzione progettuale strategica e partendo dall’esistenza del bene e dalla sua esplicitazione come valore d’uso;
- che se nel processo industriale di produzione delle merci si è posto il problema di stabilire “quale forma in quale processo?”, nel processo di valorizzazione del B.C. si deve porre l’equivalente problema “quale senso in quale cultura?”;
il valore:
che non è scomponibile, nella fattispecie, solo in valore d’uso e valore di scambio ma, soprattutto, in termini di valore di relazione (culturale appunto).
Il campo d’azione come design strategico
A proposito di definizione del campo di osservazione dobbiamo subito mettere in evidenza che ogni tentativo di sconfinamento appare poco produttivo ai fini della valorizzazione, compreso quello nobile e attualizzante introdotto dal Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio inserito di recente nell’ordinamento legislativo nazionale (2004) in forma di Testo Unico (T.U.).
