There is no great awareness in developed countries that wealth, development, and innovation are closely linked to the ability to attract, initiate and strengthen relationships between the knowledge system (arts, creativity, science, the humanities) and the productive and reproductive system of society.
We can see that, in many economically advanced nations, science and the highest levels of knowledge appear to be gradually closing in on themselves, moving away from people and from the ability to affect everyday life. People have less and less understanding of this and manage to formulate opinions about the utility of the investments in this field.
For some time now, in the so-called advanced countries there has been a debate that, in my opinion, takes up this problem in a very powerful and significant way: it is referred to as the problem of the transformation of a society of knowledge into an economy of knowledge.
Nei cosiddetti paesi avanzati è attivo da qualche tempo un dibattito che, a mio avviso, attraversa in modo forte e importante questo problema e che viene chiamato il problema della trasformazione della società della conoscenza in economia della conoscenza.
Esistono due differenti processi attraverso i quali questa transizione si manifesta in modo efficace e interessante per il nostro discorso:
1) l’industria culturale , cioè l’insieme delle applicazioni fruibili che derivano dallo sfruttamento consapevole dei giacimenti culturali di un territorio;
2) le merci come bene rappresentativo di una cultura, sintesi perfetta e fruibile delle più avanzate tecnologie, di comportamenti di consumo e innovazioni linguistiche.
Il primo dei due fenomeni parte dal presupposto che esista un certo numero di persone di un adeguato livello di istruzione e reddito sufficiente per intendere i processi della conoscenza, della scienza e dell’arte come attraenti di per sé, e ritenere che il consumo di questi produca felicità. Ma la scienza, l’arte e la conoscenza non si presentano solitamente in forma adeguata a essere «consumati» in modo diretto dal mercato dei non addetti. Esiste dunque un articolato sistema di sfruttamento e valorizzazione che la letteratura chiama appunto «industria culturale», che altro non è che un complesso sistema di mediazione che si preoccupa della «forma merce della cultura» .
Il secondo fenomeno ci permette di compiere un ulteriore passo in avanti: se le merci sono il prodotto per eccellenza della nostra società di consumatori, allora esse stesse, o meglio alcune forme particolarmente avanzate e importanti attraverso le quali le merci si possono manifestare, sono «beni culturali». È da sempre innegabile che la cultura di un popolo passa attraverso la cultura materiale e il sistema di nutrizione e approvvigionamento del cibo. Dunque un sistema di conservazione della carne, una bottiglia di vino, un mobile per sedersi o contenere i propri beni, un’automobile per muoversi, sono beni culturali che esprimono la cultura di un popolo, ma nel contempo il livello di conoscenza, di arte e di scienza disponibili.
Un esempio per noi assai importante a questo proposito è l’insieme variegato ma non illimitato dei beni che costituiscono il cosiddetto «made in Italy», cioè i beni attraverso i quali passa e si cristallizza l’idea dell’Italia nel mondo.
In entrambi questi fenomeni il contributo della cultura del progetto, del design, alla messa in condizioni di consumo di questi beni è assolutamente fondamentale. Senza questo insieme di conoscenze di mediazione tra qualità intrinseche di un artigiano o di un artista creativo, di uno scrittore o di un apparato di produzione o di conservazione, non sarebbe possibile connettere produttore di conoscenza e mercato che, come spesso avviene in molti settori, rimarrebbero dunque separati e inadeguati l’uno rispetto all’altro.
L’IPOTESI DEL DESIGN MEDIATORE E LA SUA ATTUALITÀ PROBLEMATICA
Torino e gran parte del Piemonte godono di una sempre maggior credibilità internazionale nel circuito degli eventi, dell’arte moderna e contemporanea, del design, della comunicazione di advertising e nelle evoluzioni dell’arte digitale e del virtuale, così come, in questo territorio, ci si sta molto concentrando sul transito tra città-fabbrica ed economia postindustriale diffusa. Sono queste le ragioni che rendono attuale e utile l’applicazione a questo territorio di queste riflessioni e logiche.
Individuare modelli e processi di relazione tra arte e scienza, da una parte, e sistema della produzione e della riproduzione, dall’altra, è assai funzionale a questo auspicabile sviluppo, che si trova oggi nel guado di un processo non completamente compiuto. Può soprattutto aiutare gli enti e le amministrazioni che sostengono e indirizzano lo sviluppo del territorio verso un uso più consapevole di strutture, processi e format di eventi, di cui sia nota e compresa l’utilità e chiara la potenzialità della cultura del design e i risultati da questa attendibili.
I due sistemi, arte-scienza da una parte, produzione e riproduzione dall’altra, nascono per differenza e, come acqua e olio, non sono miscelabili, pena la distruzione dei presupposti fondativi su cui si basano. Ma tantissimi cibi di cui ci nutriamo e che appagano il nostro gusto sono realizzati grazie all’accostamento di acqua e olio. Il segreto si chiama arte culinaria, sono la «preparazione e la cottura» che permettono alle due sostanze di unirsi in modo produttivo e apprezzato senza danneggiare le caratteristiche organolettiche di ciascuna delle due.
Qui di seguito si intende attrarre l’attenzione proprio sulla capacità della cultura di progetto «di cucinare ad arte» i prodotti e i processi del sistema della scienza, dell’arte e della conoscenza proprio allo scopo di trasformare il contatto con il mercato e con il loro consumo in un momento di valorizzazione e di sviluppo integrato dell’intera società. Proprio come già succede quando l’industria culturale riesce a trasformare la conoscenza in merce e le merci sul mercato diventano alfieri di cultura, arte e scienza.
Ipotesi di fondo di questo contributo è che il sistema del design possa essere osservato come potente processo di stabilizzazione e valorizzazione sociale di un territorio. Proprio grazie al tradizionale ruolo intermedio che il designer è chiamato a svolgere tra sistema della produzione e sistema di consumo, e tra il sistema delle scienze, delle conoscenze e dell’arte-creatività e il sistema della produzione, esso si trova in una condizione di favore, ossia centrale rispetto a un modello di realtà in cui i tre riferimenti destinatari sono produttori – scienziati/artisti – consumatori
