Innovare è un azione che, come un ponte, attraversa il presente basandosi su due pilastri: metodo certo e razionale di manipolazione dei fattori in gioco e capacità di assorbire l’irrazionale potenza della creatività.
Da disegnatore a design manager
Innovare le merci ed i servizi è un azione complessa. Viviamo nella società dei consumi, mai l’azione del consumare è stata così fondamentale nella vita di ciascuno di noi, sostituendo ogni azione: non ci divertiamo: guardiamo la televisione; non ci nutriamo, mangiamo una merenda preconfezionata della tal marca; non facciamo sport: ci iscriviamo ad una palestra, ecc. Un bene o un servizio programmato sostituisce ogni verbo della nostra vita.
La nostra vita è consumare e progettare questi beni e servizi è diventato di importanza strategica e difficile è differenziarsi e soddisfare un mercato sempre più saturo ed esigente.
Il successo del design è legato a questo bisogno di comprendere e qualificare le merci che consumeremo domani e questa azione così delicata e importante non può più essere lasciata nelle mani di un professionista del disegno, della rappresentazione grafica, dell’ingegneria tecnica: occorrono nuovi operatori specializzati nella difficile arte dell’integrazione tra rigidità dei processi organizzativi dell’impresa (e dell’industria) e libertà di cristallizzazione dell’eterea materia della creatività.
Creatività e organizzazione industriale sono due atti opposti che tendono ad annullarsi a vicenda: integrare con profitto questi due opposti è il mestiere del designer che è sempre meno colui che disegna di fatto l’oggetto, la comunicazione, il servizio, e sempre di più è colui che gestisce e coordina un complesso intreccio di figure mantenendo la regia creativa e strategica del risultato: un design manager.
Forma, funzione, senso e valore
Sono questi i fattori che il designer contemporaneo deve ottenere e coordinare nella merce e nel servizio di successo. Ognuno indispensabile, anche se governato da forze differenti. La capacità di disegnare, di rappresentare oggetti con la matita può essere ancora sufficiente strumentalmente a manipolare la forma, ma non basta più. Funzione, valore e significato, richiedono altre conoscenze e l’integrazione nei processi di ricerca e progettazione di nuove figure prima d’ora sconosciute nelle imprese: il sociologo, lo psicologo, l’antropologo, l’etologo, il semiologo, lo storico, ecc., nuove forme di umanesimo che si affiancano all’economia ed al management, all’arte, alla tecnologia ed all’ingegneria per formare il profilo del nuovo designer contemporaneo. Anche per questo il profilo del designer, da tecnico intermedio o addirittura autodidatta, passa ad essere un ruolo chiave che necessità una cultura universitaria ed una specializzazione mirata.
La consulenza di design
In questo contesto si complica molto il mestiere di chi deve innovare le merci, l’ufficio tecnico o la divisione design interna all’impresa (laddove esiste) sono fondamentali per garantire la continuità dei processi e la sedimentazione della conoscenza in impresa, ma le decisioni dell’innovazione design driver dei prodotti e dei servizi è diventato il problema focale che investe dentro all’impresa il massimo vertice strategico e coinvolge imprese di consulenza esterne che hanno sempre di più al loro interno queste professionalità umanistiche e scientifiche tecnologiche avanzate.
Il problema non è quasi mai solo disegnare un prodotto. L’impresa, ogni impresa è una organizzazione conservatrice per definizione, la ricerca del lucro porta l’impresa all’ottimizzazione delle risorse, alla strutturazione fissa, alla ricerca della semplificazione e del controllo sistematico di ogni fase operativa del processo.
In questo processo l’innovazione è vista come rottura (“disruption” la chiamano gli americani) e l’impresa tradizionalmente cerca di resistere ad essa, si sforza di non ammetterne le logiche, e finisce spesso per considerare l’innovazione come un fatto a cui aprire le porte per un attimo nella pretesa di ristabilire al più presto la quiete.
Innovazione continua come obiettivo
Ma l’innovazione a cui deve mirare l’impresa contemporanea è costante: diciamo che è un vero e proprio passaggio epocale nel quale ad una organizzazione impostata sulla capacità di produrre beni, se ne è sostituita nel tempo un’altra, capace di vendere e distribuire beni, ed oggi se sta sostituendo una terza: l’impresa capace di innovare in continuo senza adagiarsi su di una posizione acquisita nel tempo.
Non stiamo dunque parlando di una consulenza che si può acquistare per 3 mesi e poi tornare a fare come prima. Al contrario la consulenza deve essere l’occasione per avviare nell’impresa, con l’occasione di innovare il prodotto o il servizio, una riforma culturale che deve riuscire a far coabitare in modo produttivo il rigore dell’ottimizzazione dei fattori, dell’efficienza, con la flessibilità e la creatività dirompente.
E’ questo il cuore della sfida contemporanea all’innovazione continua: creare nell’impresa una organizzazione capace di far convivere REGOLA ed EMOZIONE.
E il design è proprio la disciplina di questa integrazione perché nei suoi statuti coesistono la tecnologia e l’ingegneria, l’umanesimo, l’arte e l’economia ed il management. Per questo motivo avvicinarsi oggi al design non è una scelta per l’impresa contemporanea, ma una necessità di sopravvivenza.
